What is herbal medicine?

For thousands of years, wherever humans and animals have inhabited the earth, plants have been used for their healing properties.  It is the oldest known healing modality.  Herbalism can be defined as “the art and science of collecting, preparing, and utilizing herbs for healing.”

Clinical herbalists work with individuals to support health through the use of herbal supplements, diet and lifestyle.  They are aware of issues of quality manufacturing of herbal products, safety and herb-drug interactions, and sustainable methods of harvesting herbs. . Western Herbal Medicine is a healing modality that blends knowledge of traditional herb use with knowledge of current scientific literature.  The herbalist is concerned with the health of the human body as well as the health of the earth for future generations.

Many healthcare professionals use or recommend herbs but do not practice Herbalism as it has been practiced traditionally in the east or the west.  For example, herbs are often promoted in a disease-treatment model, i.e. St. John’s Wort for depression.  Herbs are marginally effective when used in this model.  Conflicting data in the media about herbs may be attributed to this and common misinformation or lack of information about quality herbs and effective dosing.

Traditionally, herbalists use signs and symptoms to find patterns of physiological imbalance, and use herbs to support wellness, rather than combat disease.  In order to carefully choose and craft herbal formulations for each individual, the herbalist will evaluate medical history, family history, lifestyle, diet, and traditional diagnostic techniques such as pulse, tongue, and facial diagnosis.
